Chipinge Town Council was established through the Presidential Procalamation 18 of 2002 and its functions are defined in terms of the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 20) Act of 2013 and The Urban Council's Act Chapter 29:15. Chipinge Town is the third largest urban local authority in Manicaland province and one of the 32 urban local authorities in Zimbabwe.
Chipinge Town is situated 185km South-East of the provincial capital, Mutare, 40km away from the Mt Selinda boarder post with Mozambique and 500km from the capital city, Harare. As a neighbouring town to Mozambique Chipinge serves an estimated visiting population of 3000 to 5000 people.
